Poker Preflop Strategy VideoPlay Fewer Starting Hands - How Not To Suck at Poker Ep. 1
Whenever you sit at a table and play your first 10 poker hands you want to immediately suss out where the weaker players are that you have strong edges on.
Are they in the blinds which will give you position on them if you go postflop? Or are they on the button and likely to put you out of position if you go postflop?
Always know who the weaker players are, and be objective here. Far too many people fall into the trap of thinking they are better than everyone at the table — and they end up missing that a few people at the table are actually strong players.
In general, focusing on the weaker players helps you discern how likely it is that a pot goes HU vs MW vs 0-way, and can be the guiding factor in either expanding or constricting your preflop ranges.
The more likely a pot is to get folded preflop or maybe get 1 caller, the wider you want to be. The more likely a pot is to go MW, the tighter you want to be on average.
It may not seem valuable to fight for 1. So before you automatically limp that AJo behind a limper or fold that J9s instead of 3betting it preflop — pause and ask yourself if a more aggressive line would create more profit.
My suggestion is to understand what the common sizing defaults are, and then BEFORE you make your play, ask yourself what going a little larger might do and if that outcome is better or worse and what going a little smaller might do and again, if that outcome is better or worse.
But upon further reflection, I think we need to add an E and S to make it this model more robust. But with time, study, and the right thought process — you will generate one for sure.
Also included in E is EV, short for , expected value. The majority of the time you should either "pump it" or "dump it". Avoid limping in by simply calling the big blind.
If you decide that you are going to enter the pot, you should be looking to make a raise of about 3 or 4 times the size of the big blind.
By making a minimum raise you are letting opponents with marginal hands come in cheaply, and you are almost defeating the object of making a preflop raise.
The idea of a preflop raise is to reduce the amount of players who follow you to see a flop, as it is easier to make profitable decisions when there are fewer players in the pot.
So make sure to come in with a strong 3 or 4 BB raise, and increase the size of the raise if you find that a lot of players are still calling these raises with marginal hands or if other players have limped in before you.
If there has been a raise before you, you must now consider whether you should fold, call or raise. If you have a poor or marginal starting hand you should look to fold.
If you have a good starting hand like the ones mentioned above you should be happy to call and see a flop. If you have one of the top starting hands like AA or KK, should re-raise to help try and get as much money into the pot as possible.
There will be a few cases where limping-in will be an acceptable play. This will normally be when there have been a number of other players limping-in before you, and so you will have better odds to see a flop.
The best hands to limp in with are strong drawing hands such as suited cards with an ace or king, or any connecting cards that can make a straight.
You are not looking to make top pair in these limped multi-way pots, as they can often land you in trouble.
So aim to play hands that can land you a very strong holding or a strong draw, and then comfortably fold on the flop if neither of these materialize.
If you are playing in a shorthanded game such as a 6-max table, you can afford to reduce your starting hand requirements so that you can see more flops.
If you stick to the starting hand requirements mentioned above, you would probably find that you are folding too often and missing out on opportunities to win money.
When making your decision pre flop, you should also consider the type of players who you are playing against. If you notice that a tight player has made a raise, it is likely that they have a very strong hand, so you should re-evaluate the strength of your cards in this hand.
So, as such, I think folding here is totally fine. Like, two seconds ago, you said I should not be folding so often.
Essentially, what I mean by that is only trolls would answer this question with fold. Just a side note for quiz makers out there.
So in this scenario, obviously the average person says 3bet. I would also be 3betting this as a pure default and just playing poker from there.
So in this situation, a lot of people said that they would squeeze, some people said call, and then some people said fold.
This is kind of similar to the AT, right? We have position. We have a hand that does just fine. Is AJ really doing better than AT? Next one we have QQ.
Again, we have the trapdoor troll answer with 12 people saying that they would fold in this scenario. And this is just a scenario where, yes, go with the larger bet size side of the spectrum.
So, again, think about this situation. There is a raise from EP3 and here we are. Again, trapdoor answer, found 26 trolls that said they wanted to fold.
Obviously not going to be folding here. Although, kind of not shocking though because a lot of the average answers tend to be on the nittier side of the spectrum.
This is obviously a no-fold scenario. What is calling accomplishing? Again, this is one of those spots where as a pure default, 3bet with Ace King.
With information, there could be different spots where I could see calling here being much, much better, with certain information on EP3, with certain information on the players behind you.
But as a pure default, you should definitely be 3betting and going from there. Again, the average person wants to 3bet, totally on board of that.
I mean, flatting, yes, will get EP3 involved a pretty large chunk of the time. If you had information, yes, it could bend me towards flatting more often.
But I think as a pure default going to a normal 3bet size is going to be just fine. Next situation, we have QJ offsuit. What are we doing here?
Very few said 3bet. Some people said fold.Learning poker is hard because it is complicated and it takes a long time to figure out if you are playing well or not (because of short-term luck).
